Mosquito Pool Tests Positive For West Nile In Hancock County
7/3/18 – 4:59 A.M.
You might want to take a few extra precautions against mosquito bites. That’s because a mosquito pool in Hancock County has tested positive for West Nile virus. The Ohio Department of Health says they found the virus in a pool of mosquitoes at Van Buren State Park.
Hancock Public Health says if you’re going to be outside when mosquitoes are active, you should wear insect repellent with DEET. You should also remove standing water and containers that hold water from your property to keep mosquitoes from breeding.
The Ohio Department of Health hasn’t reported any human cases of West Nile this year. The CDC says most people infected with West Nile virus do not have symptoms. Around one in five people will develop a fever or other symptoms.
The health department says anyone riding horses on trails at Van Buren State Park should make sure their animals have the West Nile vaccine.
